Question

Macro to retrieve internet share price

Asked by: Rouchie

I need help to write a macro to retrieve share price data from the internet.  I have seen quite a few templates that do this, but they retrieve too much information and are very complex.  I need to achieve the following logic for the attached file if possible:

1) For each code listed in column A:
2) Get the share price from Yahoo using this link format:  http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=_____&f=l1
    Please note that the underscores should be replaced with the value from column A, e.g. http://finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=MSFT&f=l1
3) Put the retrieved value in column H

I have tried to do this using the Get External Data tool, but it seems to affect other cells around the value.  For me it would be much simpler if a macro could achieve this by just reading the value and placing it in the necessary cell.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Gary

Yes I appreciate that there are loads of free ones already available, but I don't want powerful, I want ultra simple!
This is why I want to have a go at writing it myself.  So far I have had a go at a Macro but I've not written before and it won't run.

Function getPrice(CompanyCode) As Variant

    Dim MyHTTP As New XMLHTTP
    Application.StatusBar = True
    Application.StatusBar = "Obtaining data for " & CompanyCode & " tickers...."

    Dim URL As String
    URL = "http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=" & CompanyCode & "&f=l1"
    MyHTTP.Open "GET", URL, False
    MyHTTP.send
    If MyHTTP.statusText <> "OK" Then GoTo ServerErrorHandler

    If Not (WorksheetFunction.IsNumber(MyHTTP.responseText)) Then getPrice = "no data"

    getPrice = CDbl(MyHTTP.responseText)

End Function

ServerErrorHandler:
MsgBox "Could not get data"

Just like in Excel you don't use all the advanced features, I think in that addin you can take just the simple function that you need.

Well I stuck with it and thanks to Google I got it working.  For anyone else who needs this functionality, then using the attached sheet, just go to Developer Tools and paste in this code in the Module1 file.  Then reference the function like this

=getPrice(A2)

You need to recalculate the sheet (F9) to refresh and get the latest quotes.  Doing that automatically is my next task...

Option Explicit
Public xmlHttpRequest As MSXML2.XMLHTTP

Function getPrice(CompanyCode As String) As Variant
    If Not xmlHttpRequest Is Nothing Then Set xmlHttpRequest = Nothing
    Dim url As String
    url = "http://download.finance.yahoo.com/d/quotes.csv?s=" & CompanyCode & "&f=l1"
    Dim myHTTP
    Set myHTTP = New XMLHTTP
    myHTTP.Open "GET", url, False
    myHTTP.send ""
    If myHTTP.statusText <> "OK" Then GoTo ServerErrorHandler
    If Not (WorksheetFunction.IsNumber(myHTTP.responseText)) Then getPrice = "no data"
    getPrice = CDbl(myHTTP.responseText)

    Exit Function

ServerErrorHandler:
    MsgBox "Error. Could not get data for " & CompanyCode

End Function

I used this url with XMLHTTP
http://finance.yahoo.com/q?s=

but I having to do some heavy duty parsing to grab the values, your url was smater

to refresh your data try this
=getPrice(A2)+NOW()*0

You can avoid parsing by specifying exactly what data you want to retrieve using the Yahoo URL querystring parameters:

Do you know of a way to refresh the data automatically.  The "Calculate Now" and "Calculate Sheet" buttons do not refresh the live data.

I tried adding a button with this macro code underneath but again this approach doesn't work...!

Sub RefreshClick()
    Application.ActiveWorkbook.RefreshAll
End Sub

Do you mean refresh on a time basis? The function will update automatically if you change the lookup code in column A
