Question

Excel 2003 VBA very slow with copy/paste option

Asked by: jamiepryer

Hi,
the below code opens up all files within a spcific folder, then copys the data from them into a master spreadsheet.

it works well to begin with upto around the 40-60 file mark, then it suddenly gets very slow and it seems that its the "activesheet.paste" option thats really taking forever?!
Any suggestions?

Ive turned off all the standard things, like:

Application.ScreenUpdating = False
Application.DisplayAlerts = False
Application.Calculation = xlCalculationManual
Application.CutCopyMode = False

Workbooks.Add
    Set CollateWB = ActiveWorkbook 'main wb to save all the data in hte other ones below

Do While TheFile <> ""
Set WB = Workbooks.Open(MyPath & TheFile)
Set ColWBsht1 = Sheets(1)
Collate CollateWB
WB.Close
Loop

Private Sub Collate(ColWBsht1)
Set ActiveWB = ActiveWorkbook

'selects some data with various checks
Selection.Copy
ColWBsht1.Activate
CBWTotalUsers = Range("A65536").End(xlUp).Row 'finds the end row
        Range("A" & CBWTotalUsers + 1).Select 'goes to the end row + 1 so it doesnt overwrite it
        ActiveSheet.Paste 'this is where is gets VERY slow after about 50 files processed?
end sub

Hello jamiepryer,
Does the StatusBar say "Calculate" at the bottom of the window? If so, you might try turning calculation off while your macro runs. You can test this using the Tools...Options...Calculation menu item.

Do you have any event macros? The paste operation may be triggering them. You can turn them off while the macro runs with:
Sub MyMacro()
Application.EnableEvents = False
On Error GoTo Errhandler
'Your code goes here
Errhandler:
     Application.EnableEvents = True
End Sub

Regards,

Brad

jamiepryer,
My apologies for my useless first suggestion--I now see that you have already tried it. But perhaps turning events off will help.

Brad
