excel copy paste not working

Have an issue with excel 2007, If I open a workbook and select a portion of it , then click copy, close it then open another excel spreadsheet click on a cell then try to paste its not there and paste is grayed out. If I leave the spread sheet I copied from open while I copy and paste it works. I have always copied what I needed closed the spreadsheet and pasted it in another one. The only thing that has changed is I have a new profile on the pc.
