HOw about this which returns a count of non blank cells?

when you divide 1 by each array then the result is an array of 1s or #DIV/0! errors. 1 only occurs when B2:D2 isn't blank or zero.....so if B2 is zero, C2 is text and D2 is blank you get this array

When 2 is looked up in an array that contains no values greater than 2 then it matches with the last number....in this case the 1....and the corresponding value is returned from B2:D2, i.e. the text in C2.
The priciple is the same as Rory's "zzzzzz", in this case we only need 2 because the only possible number in the array is 1 (errors are ignored)

copied down?
