This isn't very clear to me. Which cells need the formula(s). Can you give the expected results?

Barry,

Sorry for the poorly explained question. In the attached file, I need a formula that will search all of column A for 911701, then search for all of Column B for 235.110, then find the value in Column C and place it in the correct cell.

I will change 911701 to other accoutning codes as well as 235.110.

what I am trying to use now and I could be WAY off is:

=sumproduct(A1:A3=911701)*(B1:B3=235.110)???? I dont know how to get the value that would be in C1, C2, or C3?

I have attached the file with some color codes....

Thanks for the help.

Hello wrt1mea,
If there is only ever one match, and it is numeric, then you could use a SUMPRODUCT formula like:
=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A3=911701)*(B1:B3=235.110),C1:C3)

I used a comma before C1:C3 in case that column might contain text that needs to be ignored. You'd get a #VALUE! error otherwise.

Regards,

Brad

Yes! All I need to match is one value (dollar figure) per 911701 and 235.110 numbers. I am going to try and I will let you know.

It is not working. When I put the formula in:

=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A3=911701)*(B1:B3=235.110),C1:C3), excel is cutting off the "0" in 235.110 and its returning a value of 0 when it should be 2521212. Thanks!

Since columns A and B contain text data that looks like numbers, you might try surrounding the search parameters with double-quotes:
=SUMPRODUCT((A1:A3="911701")*(B1:B3="235.110"),C1:C3)

Byundt,

Ok, putting the numbers in quotes does work; however I need to be able reference an accounting code like 911701 via a cell number. See the below formula on the production sheet (obviously I cant  post it for confidentiality reasons...)

=SUMPRODUCT(('Enertia Pull'!$C$1:$C$45521="911701")*('Enertia Pull'!$H$1:$H$45521="235.110"),('Enertia Pull'!$Q$1:$Q$45521)).

If I use this, it does return the correct value...GREAT! but if I try to replace 911701 with a cell reference like C25, with or without quotes / double or single, it does not work. How can I make this where it looks to a specific cell for the number?

by: byundtPosted on 2009-10-13 at 09:08:49ID: 25561410

You need to make your formula and data consistent. Either all text or all numbers.

You need to determine if cell C25 contains a number or text that looks like a number. If you change the format of a cell containing a number (for example to display a couple of decimal places), it will respond accordingly. Text that looks like a number, on the other hand, will not change appearance.

=ISNUMBER(C25)             TRUE if C25 contains a number, FALSE if it contains text
=ISTEXT(C25)                   TRUE if C25 contains text that looks like a number, FALSE if it contains a real number

The next step is to make sure that your formula is consistent with your data:
=SUMPRODUCT(('Enertia Pull'!$C$1:$C$45521=C25 & "")*('Enertia Pull'!$H$1:$H$45521="235.110"),('Enertia Pull'!$Q$1:$Q$45521))          converts C25 into text if it isn't already
=SUMPRODUCT(('Enertia Pull'!$C$1:$C$45521=--C25)*('Enertia Pull'!$H$1:$H$45521="235.110"),('Enertia Pull'!$Q$1:$Q$45521))               converts C25 into a number if it isn't already

The following instructions are specific to Excel 2003 and earlier (which I have available to me right now). Excel 2007 has similar procedures, but the method of accessing them will be different.

To convert an entire column of data into numbers:
1) Copy a blank cell
2) Select the cells to be converted
3) Edit...Paste Special, then choose the Add option

To convert an entire column of data into text
1) Open the Data...Text to Columns menu item
2) Choose "Delimited"
3) On step 2 of the wizard, uncheck all delimiters
4) On step 3 of the wizard, make sure that the option is chosen for Text

Byundt,

This was the solution:

"The next step is to make sure that your formula is consistent with your data:
=SUMPRODUCT(('Enertia Pull'!$C$1:$C$45521=C25 & "")*('Enertia Pull'!$H$1:$H$45521="235.110"),('Enertia Pull'!$Q$1:$Q$45521))          converts C25 into text if it isn't already "

So thank you very much. Look for me in the future. I am constantly posting questions for formulas.
