Simple Excel macro: Iterate from B3 to last nonblank row in column B. Assign counter value to corr. col A

EE Excel Experts:

I need a simple macro that will
1. Establish an integer counter with starting value of zero.
2. Iterate through Cell B3 through to the last row in column B that has a nonblank string value.
3. When B# has a string length > 0 then increment the counter and assign its value to the row in column A corresponding to the row of B#.

I am looking forward to a simple solution in VBA.

1st of all, thank you for your help.

I have had to struggle a bit with macro security issues for a while. That is why I have take so long to respond. I had to move my spread sheet to a "macro enabled" file with type xlsm. I hope that was a good move.

I created a sub(routine) in the VBA Editor in a module that is Public without parameters. I believe that is what I have to do to make my VBA Sub a macro. When I tried to run it I got the following: (Please see attached)

Here is the change that I made to Cbrine's code which seems to work. But there is a problem that I failed to specify in my original question. Can you help? All of column A needs to be cleared of any previous value before any iteration begins or else previous number assignments remain.

Now that I have paseted in the code, I can see where I could have removed the "Set ws = ActiveSheet". A correction is welcome if I am wrong about that. Oops..!! Never mind. I have to keep "Set ws = ActiveSheet".

This is how it should be.  The dim statement was wrong, which cause your error.  GirardAndrew fix was the correct way to fix my error.

Thanks. That looks like it will work for me. I also fixed my own problem of lack of initialization with the following code change. I'll add your change to make it complete
