Question

Microsoft Groove & LAN to LAN Tunnel

Asked by: pterranova13

I would like to see if it would be possible to utilize the Microsoft Groove Client (No Groove Server) over a LAN to LAN VPN Tunnel (IPSEC) with a client. We have the need to have instant messenger available for a client and I do not want to use a public instant messenger for this. I have a LAN to LAN tunnel with them current and would like to know if I install the groove client on a workstation in my office and then have it installed at another location at my clients office we could set them up to communicate with out going outside of the lan to lan tunnel. This gives us the security we need while allow this functionality.

Groove does not require you to use a Groove server. You can simply install on the two client computers and share files or use its messenger services securely via the Internet using SSL. No VPN is require, just each member of the Groove workgroup requires an internet connection.

To elaborate further, Groove can be configured in two ways a Groove server and a series of clients, or simply a Workgroup of Groove clients (no server). The former allows more management capabilities, but the later is likely more common. Each user requires a Groove license, one user creates a Groove workspace, and then via an e-mail invites another user to become a member of that workspace. So long as any two members of the workspace are connected to the Internet at the same time, data will be synchronized between the members, and messenger services are available. This is done very securely using encryption, so there is no need a for a VPN. You might want to watch the following video presentation to get a overview of how it works.

But i could you a VPN tunnel if I felt more security was needed?

Does Groove run similar to AOL or MSN? i do not want run into issues of security like I would if I was use AOL or MSN.

I am not familiar with Groove server, but if you implemented it you could likely control the traffic to use the VPN. Using independent Groove clients requires internet access which I believe allows Microsoft to orchestrate the "handshaking" between clients. Once connected the traffic is restricted between the members of the workspace and protected by 192 bit encryption. You can have multiple users in the same office, but they will only see the conversations and data if they are members of the appropriate workspace. Therefore as an example, Groove is often used by one vendor and multiple businesses, but each with their own workspace to maintain security. Because Groove uses a common network, the internet, it would be theoretically possible for someone to capture packets that contained messages, but the packets are all encrypted, so it is quite safe. Users can only converse if working in the same workspace, simultaneously. Seems to me there was an article a while back where Groove was used to relay messages to the middle east for some military maneuvers.
