To elaborate further, Groove can be configured in two ways a Groove server and a series of clients, or simply a Workgroup of Groove clients (no server). The former allows more management capabilities, but the later is likely more common. Each user requires a Groove license, one user creates a Groove workspace, and then via an e-mail invites another user to become a member of that workspace. So long as any two members of the workspace are connected to the Internet at the same time, data will be synchronized between the members, and messenger services are available. This is done very securely using encryption, so there is no need a for a VPN. You might want to watch the following video presentation to get a overview of how it works.

Groove does not require you to use a Groove server. You can simply install on the two client computers and share files or use its messenger services securely via the Internet using SSL. No VPN is require, just each member of the Groove workgroup requires an internet connection.
