Question

can't read the outline from....no text converter

Asked by: kevluck373

I know a lot of people have this same problem as I am. When I try to open a ppt file in power point 07 it gives me "no text converter installed." I have the Office 07 file converter installed along w/ powerpoint viewer 03 and still have no luck.

I've tried a few trial downloads of power point repair software, and can see it does recover some slides, but in order to get them you have to buy the software.

I've tried OpenOffice but no luck w/ that either, and I do have Office 07 installed w/ all the updates.

I have Windows Vista ultimate installed but have also tried it on Windows XP PCs and had no luck either.

I guess there's no way to attach a ppt file because I tried to zip it and didn't work either; knew there was a ppt file in the zip and didn't allow it.

Does anyone have an idea of something I could try, or know if a way I can attach the file?

kevluck373,

How are you doing?

Did you follow all steps in this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/924074

Do you have SP3 on your office installation and all updates? Run microsoftupdates.microsoft.com (from Internet Explorer) and get all updates.

To the above, you only have 03 powerpoint viewer and office 2007, or you also have office 2007, I wasn't sure on this one.

To upload here, try saving the file as .txt and then zip that up.

You could try opening PowerPoint, then opening the file (not opening it from double clicking the file). Also, open a new blank powerpoint and go to save as, see what other powerpoint formats are available in your installation. Then try changing the file name to that, such as .xls, .xlsx, .xltx, etc, like in Excel. Maybe one of these will get it to open, then save it back to the original file extension. I think other options are (
<pre class="FreeTextFull">pptx or ppts)?

Also, try changing it .pdf, a lot of times it is a pdf file or even a .doc that somoene sent and used the wrong file extension.

http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00135.htm has some information.

Your file may be completely corrupt. If that's the case, try Insert | Slides | From File (that's under Home tab | New Slide | Reuse slides in PPT 2007) or see if Open Office's Impress will open it.

I object. Both redrumkev and I gave good information. Can't help it if the original poster didn't post back with more info. It may also be that his file is completely corrupt and unrecoverable, but that doesn't negate the fact that we both steered him toward good information about his issue.

Then again, maybe I just don't understand the difference between "deleted" and "closed."
