If I were you I would start by having a look in VBA for rogue projects and Auto-macros. This sounds like it could be an amateurish virus.
If you are unfamiliar with VBA then let me know and I will go into more detail.

Personal.xls is the file that stores your macros so that it is available no matter which file you open. You can see the personal.xls file when you go into window -> unhide.
When Excel Loads up, it also opens every file in the excel startup directory which is called xlstart and is located in the
Microsoft Office\Office
Directory. You can delete the personal.xls file here if you don't want that to open up anymore.
Another place from where excel opens file up as it starts up is shown in tools -> Options -> General.
Hope this helps

You could start here
http://support.microsoft.c
There are numerous ways to change your startup, and this document will show you some ways of achieving this.
This one will shed some light on personal.xls
http://support.microsoft.c
from the document
"In Microsoft Excel for Windows, the Personal.xls file normally resides in the \Excel\Xlstart folder" this file is used like the normal.dot in Word. For storage of standard macro's etc.
