Not that I know of. You can select the text by using the T on the toolbar in Acrobat Reader 4; or the A on the toolbar in Acrobat Reader 3. Copy/paste to Word, but text will be unformatted.

by: sri_darrPosted on 2000-07-26 at 09:25:14ID: 3594016

Unless ofcourse you have Word 2000... then u might be a little lucky.

Open your PDF document into Adobe Acrobat Reader for Windows.
Select and copy the text -:
On the Tools menu, click Select Text.
Click and drag the I-beam mouse pointer over the text you want to copy. The text will be selected (highlighted).
Then click the Edit->Copy and then come to Word and Paste it ...
as suggested by DB.

All character level formatting ( like fonts, color etc ) are retained in your copied doc. But if there are any  graphics then those formatting are not retained.

NOTE: If Security is set in yr PDF, then you might not be able to COPY the text.

Dear  Dreamboat...
I did that before..and it was pain in the arse..it took so long to copy and paste the whol;e thing ..since you could just copy only page by page...

Dear Sri Darr...

unfortunately i don't have word 2000...hurr...!! but i tried to do it in word 97..it seems hassle to copy ..cus it can be done just 1 page per copy..huhs...

anyway , maybe it 's not going to waste my time...do you know how to converse  document from words 97 to file.pdf...?

cheers ,

There are some add-ins around, but the ones I saw when browsing require Adobe Acrobat (=$) and save to HTML and/or RTF (which Word can import fairly well)

BTW 1: Do not get fooled by the Acrobat Reader 4 T[] icon. If you click and hold it you can toggle it to a [T] which is a "Column Select Tool" or to show a "filled circle over a little square" which is a "Graphics Selection Tool".

BTW 2: You do not need Word 2000, Word 97 also interprets the character level formatting (or at least attempts to).

Hi,

BCL Computers makes a plugin that converts to RTF and another that can make xls out of tables.

Cheers.

The a.m. PDF to RTF plug-in costs 200$ _and_ needs Adobe Acrobat 4 which is approx. 230$ (street price).

In a similar question (*) Osama recommended http://www.iceni.com/geminiSet.html , s/he seems have personal experience with it. But again: 159$ + Adobe Acrobat

korsila,
download ghostscript and GSview here http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/
once you've installed both, open GSview and then open your pdf file.  go to edit and extract text.  choose the pages you want extracted and when it asks you how you want to save type:
filename.doc

if the pdf is encrypted you can download a patch pdf sec.ps http://www.ozemail.com.au/~geoffk/pdfencrypt/

by: korsilaPosted on 2000-07-27 at 09:55:33ID: 3620193

the file.pdf can not be openned from GSview..the following error message came up.....

------------------
Failed to load C:\Programs\gview\gs0.0\gsdll32.dll, error 126

are these the files you downloaded:
gs601w32.exe
gsv33w32.exe

these two files can be found here under win 95, 98, and NT:
http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/get601.html

make sure you install gs601w32.exe first, then install gsv33w32.exe

right click on each file and select save target as.  then run them from your desktop

by: criPosted on 2000-07-27 at 15:00:44ID: 3627373

As far as I know Ghostscript is for viewing and printing, not for converting it in a editable format )unless you want to edit in the "source code" i.e. altering the raster instructions)

See the a.m. link given by mgreenoe:

"..An interpreter for the PostScript (TM) language, with the ability to convert PostScript language files to many raster formats, view them on displays, and print them on printers that don't have PostScript language capability built in;
An interpreter for Portable Document Format (PDF) files, with the same abilities..."

by: mgreenoePosted on 2000-07-27 at 15:30:07ID: 3627826

right, ghostscript is for viewing and printing Postscript, PDF and the like.  GSview is a gui that allows you to interact with ghostscript without doing anything with the source code.  i've used this method many times and it works great.

if you wanted to use the copy and paste method, as mentioned above, you can open your pdf file and select view and check continuous.  you can then ctrl+a and it will select all the text.  then copy and paste it into your word doc.

by: criPosted on 2000-07-27 at 15:41:50ID: 3627993

For viewing/printing and text/graphic snagging PDF files I would use the Acrobat Reader (freeware), this is its purpose.

But, sorry, the question is about converting to Microsoft Word format. And the answer is: Best you can do right now is to convert it to RTF if you can cough up 160 to 350$, depending whether you have Adobe Acrobat or not.

by: mgreenoePosted on 2000-07-27 at 15:58:08ID: 3628252

i disagree with cri.  using ghostscript/GSview is easy, free and the best choice.  especially, since it's under the gnu license and won't cost a dime much less $160-$350.

by: criPosted on 2000-07-27 at 23:23:36ID: 3634659

mgreenoe, I think we are talking about two different things. The $160 to $350 is the price to pay to get _editing_ ability which is asked for in this question, which neither Ghostview nor Acrobat Reader do provide.

And, what can ghostscript/GSview do more than Acrobat Reader which is free too ? Can it select text _areas/blocks_ ? Or is it by lines ? Try to get a column.

Anyone often faced with this perplexing conversion question might want to read this:

http://www.planetpdf.com/mainpage.asp?WebPageID=241

Anyone want to comment on whether that article's warning is accurate:
"Let's hope you didn't use the combination of TrueType fonts and
Distiller (instead of PDFWriter). If you did, the text in the file is just a
collection of little symbols and you will  not be able to use any of the above.
Perhaps it's time to employ a fast typist."

I found this to be a helpful article with links to many other products - and it included many of those good products suggested in other comments above, for example:

If Dreamboat does not object, either (can not resist) "as before", or, better, contact Community Support with a 0 pointer to transfer it to the PAQ and return your 20 points. And it would not hurt to know why the best possible answer is not acceptable in your case.

could you vote who deserves my point????

You don't need to award points if the suggestions didn't work. All apologies accepted and sorry if I came down hard--but many INTENTIONALLY do not respond (I believe) because they don't want to pay the points or because they don't take the responsibility of reading the rules of this site.

Anyway, I'm only suggesting:

1.  That you tell us why the suggestions we offered did not work for you.

2.  I do not object to what cri has suggested. To do that, go to the bottom of this page and click on Community Support. Post a question there--with ZERO points. Ask them to change the points to ZERO on THIS thread and to transfer the thread to the PAQ (previously asked questions) because there is a lot of information here for others--they just didn't happen to help you.

korsila - When you post a question here at Experts Exchange you take a certain amount of responsibility for your question. You must manage your question and respond to the posts that the Experts make. If you don't have time or can't set your priorities in this manner, then it is best not to post a question here until you can give your post the priority that it deserves.
