Question

Installing Office 2000 over MS Works 2001

Asked by: ags00

We order Dell computers that come with Works 2001 installed. One of the first things we do when we receive them is load Office 2000 (upgrade).

Many of the users get errors when working in Word - such as Winword.exe has generated errors... page fault... and gives registry numbers. (Sorry I don't have the error message verbatim) I called Microsoft and they had me delete a file "that would cause compatibility problems since Office was an upgrade."  However the user is still having the exact same problems.

Most of these users are using Windows 2000, but two of them have 98. Is this really caused because we loaded Office over Works?  Thanks

Probably so.  Can you do an uninstall of Works before doing the install of Office?  That is probably a better solution than installing over it.

Hello ags00.

This question is still open.

What would you like to do with it? Basically, you've got the following options:

1. Award points to the expert who was most helpful.

2. Delete it because the problem's been resolved or no longer exists. Your points are returned to you. This requires no objections from others who posted in your question.

3. PAQ it because the information may be useful, but is not useful to you. Your points are returned to you. This requires no objections from others who posted in your question.

Input from posting Experts on items 2 and 3 is greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

I can't uninstall because our Office 2000 is an upgrade - we had already tried this on an old machine and it would not let us install 2000 because there was nothing to upgrade from.  I'm wondering if there are some files I should delete, like the Microsoft person was suggesting.

This question is fairly old ags00. If you want to leave it open, then I suggest you create a new, 0-point question here in the MS Office topic area with a pointer to this one to get some more input.

Not that it will help you at this point, but in the future, when you upgrade over Works, try uninstalling it first. Then when yo go to do the upgrade and O2K tells ou it can't find any upgrade products, do this:  Pop out the upgrade disk, put in the Works disk, and tell O2K where to find it.  Then the installation program is happy, and you can re-insert the O2K disk and continue on your merry way.  This is how it works for pre-2001 versions of Works, etc., so I would assume it would work for the latest as well.

At least I hope it will, since I'll be doing this next week.  Good luck.
