Hmmm. I don't know if there is a converter. Try copying and pasting into a new Word document.

When I tired opening it in Notepad or Word, it opens with rubbish

I checked Microsoft's tech page and their solution is to convert the document before importing it into Word. Therefore, you will need the Word Pro or Ami Pro program to do this.

Here is a web site that has a program called "Quick to Convert." You can download a demo. It might help you with this doc.

WD: How to Convert Between Lotus Word Pro 96 and Word
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition
Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0
Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0a
Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0c
Microsoft Word for Windows NT 6.0
Microsoft Word for the Macintosh 6.0
Microsoft Word for the Macintosh 6.0.1
Microsoft Word for the Macintosh 6.0.1a
Microsoft Word for the Macintosh 6.0.1

This article was previously published under Q139792
SUMMARY
The Microsoft Word versions listed at the beginning of this article do not directly support importing or exporting of Lotus Word Pro 96 word processing file formats.

Word Pro is the successor to Lotus Ami Pro versions 3.x. This article discusses how to convert documents between Lotus Word Pro and Microsoft Word.
MORE INFORMATION
Converting Lotus Word Pro Documents to Word
To convert documents from Lotus Word Pro to Word, follow these steps:

On the Lotus File menu, click either Save As or Import/Export.
If you select Import/Export, select the option to export your document into another file format.
Select one of the following file format options from the List Files Of Type list in the Save As dialog box or the "Export to what file format" list in the Import/Export dialog box.

Rich Text Format (RTF)
MS Word for DOS 3,4,5,6
MS Word for Windows 1.0
MS Word for Windows 2.0
MS Word for OS/2
MS Word for Windows 6.0
For best results, select the option that most closely matches your Microsoft Word version. Word 7.0 can open any of the file formats referenced in this step, but the MS Word for Windows 6.0 format will usually result in the best formatting retention when converting to Word 7.0.
Click Export to convert the file, and then open the document in Word.
Converting Word Documents to Lotus Word Pro
Word Pro automatically recognizes Word versions 1.x through 7.0 for Windows, Word 6.x for the Macintosh, Word 6.x for Windows NT, Word versions

3.x through 6.0 for MS-DOS, and RTF documents, regardless of file name extension. To open files from any of these versions of Word into Word Pro, provided the appropriate converter is installed, click Open on the File menu and open the file.

Word Pro does not recognize Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition documents. To open these document in Word Pro, save the document using either the Rich Text Format (*.RTF) or Word 6.0/95 (*.doc) converter from Word.

Word Pro also exports the following formats that Word can read. If any of these (for example, WordPerfect 6.0) provide better retention of particular formats most important to you, use it as an alternative interim format:

RFT-DCA * (listed in Word Pro as DCA/RFT)
MS Windows Write 3.x
WordPerfect 5.1
WordStar 3,4,5,6,7
WordStar for Windows 1.x
WordPerfect 6.x
MS WordPad 1.0
HTML (Supported for import by Word Internet Assistant)
Enable 4.x

Word Pro does not recognize Word 5.x for the Macintosh documents, and these must be saved from Word 5.x in RTF or Word for MS-DOS format prior to opening into Word Pro.

Lotus Word Pro 96 is manufactured by Lotus Corporation, a vendor independent of Microsoft; we make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability.
