Memory could not be read error when closing Outlook 2000 SP-3

Hi.  This is my third question here at Experts-Exchange.  I will try to be prompt making comments.  Good luck and I hope you can help me out!


When closing a fully updated version of Microsoft Outlook 2000 on a clean install fully-updated Win XP Pro machine, I get the following error message:

"The instruction at "0x76f911c" referenced memory at "0x0010ae14.  The memory could not be "read."  Click on OK to terminate the program."


So far, I haven't noticed any major ill effects of this problem but I'd like to fix it if possible without doing a complete uninstall and reinstall of Office 2000 and the SPs.  I do hope it doesn't mean that I have faulty RAM modules or something that serious.

Hello zeeny,

Try to :

1. change the location of RAM.

2. Change the size of registry or Page file. Right click on My Computer, the select properties then click on Advanced : the click on Performance Options , click on change and then you will get virtual memory screen there you can change the intial size and maximum size of your paging file ( depend on Memory size ??).

In addition to that change the Current Registry size to 100 MB. Then restart your machine .

Hi xittix,

i chose your suggestion #2 first, as it was easier than reseating ram in my overcrowded box.   lo and behold, it worked right off.  no more errors!  i simply set the paging file size to "system managed size."

I should add that the error has occurred once out of ten times closing Outlook after I made the above adjustment.  But that I can stand.
