The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Microsoft Office 2003 not installing correctly on Win2kSP4

Asked by Bobbi_NGEmu in Microsoft Office Suite

Hi there,

I ran into an interresting issue today for the first time, and after several hours of trying, I decided to take a look here. I've installed Office 2003 (propably for the 200th time) over Office 2000, and after installation encountered an error I've never seen before: Starting the applications from the start menu works, however every time I do that I see a "Microsoft Word is preparing to install ..." screen, which goes away after 2-3 seconds without asking for a CD or anything. I can use these applications just fine now.

However, when I double click on a .doc/.doc/.xls/whatever office document, I get an error telling me that no application has been configured for this document type, and that I should go into the control panel and do so. Looking there, I see that .doc files are set to open in "Microsoft Word", but the error still exists. Now when I login to the computer using the ADs administrator, the error is gone and I can work just fine.

The system is running Windows 2000 with SP4 and all the latest hotfixes. I've tried and installed SP1 and all hotfixes for Office 2003 as well, that didn't help. The computer is within a local Active Directory domain, the logged in user is a member of the administration group. Permission should not be an issue therefor, but I'd be glad to learn otherwise :)

Thanks for your help,
