The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Installation of Microsoft Office 2003 for Windows XP Professional

Asked by Nerdx in Microsoft Office Suite

Hi all,

I purchased a new computer a few years ago, which came with Microsoft Office 2003, Microsoft Works and Money. I decided to make a copy of the CDs for backup, in case it got lost. When I purchased the computer, it had Windows XP Home Edition pre-installed on it. The original pack of CDs were lost when we moved house, but I still had the copies with the serial codes written inside the pack. I doubt this is illegal as I am only using it for myself, right?

I have tested all of the CDs straight after they were copied, on the XP Home machine and they all worked just as well as the originals. I have recently upgraded my PC to Windows XP Professional with a clean format (not just upgrade). The copy of the CDs no longer works as it stops when trying to install the cabinet named 'SKU011.CAB' - this is for the Microsoft Office 2003 CD.

All of the other CDs still work without a problem but the Office one displays that error above each time on installation. Now, I've searched all over the Internet via. Google to try and resolve this problem, but there was possible solution for me as the solutions where for when they have 'Updated' Microsoft Office with Windows Update - which is a total different problem from mine. The problem persists, even after cleaning and running 'Offcln.exe' in the CD. I don't just want to find the 'SKU011.CAB' and download it just for the installer to work, I want to know what the problem is and why it is suddenly not working (as the same problem may happen again).

The reason why I ran 'Offcln.exe' from the CD is because I had Microsoft Office XP installed for temporary use. I uninstalled it, using Add/Remove programs, and then installed Office 2003 two days later. I think that Office XP Pro must have something to do with the problem as I never had it on Windows XP Home and it ran well.

This is my first question I have posted on Experts-Exchange, so I don't have much points - but I am giving away all that I have got for this problem to be resolved. I am new to EE so I don't really use/have much points.

I would be grateful if someone could help me as I need to use Microsoft Office soon and can't be using Notepad or WordPad - even if it is for temporary use as it doesn't support what I need.

Thanks, hope to hear from you soon.

P.S. I understand it may take a while to solve this question so I will add 5 points each day (as I get 5 points added each day with my account, I think).
