Question

Text Colors/ Highlighting- Excel

Asked by: gws226

Hey all,

I have a problem with an user and Excel.  Hopefully I am describing clearly...

When they add text to a cell, and either change the text color or add hightlight to the cell, if fails to show the results (ie: If I change the text from black (Default) to blue, the text will remain black.

BUT, If I click on the cell it shows the text as the correct color and highlight.  (once I click off the cell, it will return to the default coloring (black)

If I open an xls that someone else has created, it correctly shows Colors and Highlights... but if I attempt to create color or highlights within that same document, I receive the same result (only black, no highlight.. unless I click on the cell)

I've done the typical repairs, unistall/ reinstall office, office default settings registry repair etc etc.

Please help,

I've never heard of this before.  Do you mean that when you select the cell: a) your formatting actually appears properly in the cell; or b) the format-related items on the toolbar simply indicate that your formatting is assigned to the cell, even though none of that formatting actually displays?

Hmmm...  In the meantime, here's a few things you might check:

1) Workbook/Worksheet Protection
2) Cell Protection
3) Conditional formatting on the cells
4) Check for an activated "High Contrast" option on your PC (under Control Panel >  Accessibility Options, uncheck the "Use High Contrast" check box)

Another question: Does the proper color/formatting show up in Print Preview?

It looks to me like a graphical problem. I have experienced similar behaviour today, which I never saw before and can not explain.

I found this link which might be a pointer towards a potential cause but a lot of work needs to be done... maybe it can help you define the cause

Hey,

Thanks for the replies...

Im referring to "Do you mean that when you select the cell: a) your formatting actually appears properly in the cell;"

If I select the cell the formatting is correct, if I click off the cell, the formatting disappears.

In the print preview the cells appear as they were formatted...
If I open the same spreadsheet on another PC, the cells appear correct.

Well, that certainly doesn't sound like you have any of the "High Contrast" options turned on.... Similar, but not quite.

I'm at a loss.  Perhaps calacuccia's lead may be helpful...?

Hi,
Did you open the file in other office programs like Open Office?
We experienced similar problems when we created/modified xls files in Open Office and than opened them in MS-Excel.

Open Office is not in use here.  Ive experienced this issue both with opening a new xls and opening an xls that someone has already created.

Disregard my last...

It was the high contrast option as stated by Galisteo8 .

That actually cleared up another minor issue with IE backgrounds displaying incorrectly in version 7 as well.

Thanks!
