ODBC - connection to <name> failed (Error 3151)
Hi Everyone,
I have an MS Access 2003 question. I am trying to setup an ODBC connection on a client connecting to a SQL Srver database. I am getting the following errors "ODBC connection to file failed" Details are as follows--ODBC - connection to <name> failed. (Error 3151) The ODBC is accessed via a network connection but the connection to the server seems to be OK Any ideas or help would be very much appreciated.

Any firewall software installed on either machine? Are you connecting to a machine name or IP address?

Hi zceororio, We, of course have a hardware firewall device on the lan. There is not a firewall of any kind, software or hardware, on the client. It is running Windows 2000 OS. This does not act like network connectivity issue as the error implies. It is most likely a database application type error. But then what do I know? That is why I have come to Experts exchange for tips and advice. I am not sure what I am missing here but I set up ODBC connections frequently and without any problems. My client's supervisor IS connected to the same database and without any issues. We are running SQL 2000 on the server where the database resides. We are connecting to the host name not the IP address. Both forward and reverse are resolved so DNS is not an issue I don't think. My client's supervisor is also running Windows 2000 OS and both are running MS Office 2003. The application is MS Access 2003. Anyway I hope this is enough information to rule out some common issues. Thanks for your help out there.

Hi All
Thanks for your suggestions. It turned out that the default database on the ODBC setup was not configured. It had nothing to do with a firewall as it is an internal connection. Thanks all until next time.

Hi Dr-cog,
i am also having similar issue with ODBC connection. I believe it times out and looses the connection.
My issue comes from a software when it tries to cross check database entries while fetching and checking software throws 3151 ODBC connection failed error.
i would really appreciate if you could share your solution on the website.
