According to the PrevX database, the file is not a threat:

 http://fileinfo.prevx.com/QQd89616888191-AVUT2486389/AVUTIL.DLL.html

The fb2.tmp entry is at the top of the list of common file names (No. 3)

The only reference to fb2.tmp that I can find is that a file with this name is sometimes created by avutil.dll which is a video codec as far as I can tell. The file is normally created in the windows\temp folder.

It could be that the file is hiidden so enable the viewing of hidden files and fiolders if you want ro try and find it. Good news is that nothing I have found suggests is is malicious in any way,

The avutil.dll file which generates the fb2.tmp file,  is a component of  ConvertXtoDVD. It is a burning tool that makes it easy for users to transfer movie files from their drives onto DVDs.  Do you have this software installed on your pc?  Or have you recently uninstalled it?

"When starting Windows XP Pro, Norton AV reports that Microsoft Office component is waiting for a virus scan of a file entitled fb2.tmp"

This indicates that you have a problem with either NAV or MS office.  I would recommend you REMOVE Norton Antivirus -- it makes our computer run 50% of the speed it should.  Once you remove it, see if you get any further messages about this problem -- if not, then consider going to a MUCH better AV program --

www.eset.com -- download NOD 32 -- it is updated every day, and gets many viruses that NAV does not, and it does not generate these kinds of meaningless or irrelevant, or annoying messages from bad software

Thanks so far, folks.  Further info as follows:
  *  hidden files on view - nothing found.
  *  search doesn't find avutil.dll.
  *  I don't use ConvertXtoDVD, but do have other video transfer programs (inc Roxio Drag to Disc, Drag n'Drop CD + DVD, etc.)  Might they use the same codec?  If so, why doesn't the .dll show on search?
  *  Why is it reporting as "MS Office component is waiting for a scan of fb2.tmp"? (ie, why MS Office?)
At least it appears to be an irritation rather than a problem...as so often!

Take a look in msconfig and see if anything under "startup" or "services (Hide All Microsoft Services)" is relevant to this issue.
Apparently, avcodec.dll,avformt.dll & avutil.dll are all used in video transfer software, so the files probabley exist on your pc somewhere.
