Unable to save Excel 2007 file on network share - give error file already open

We upgraded to Vista Business and office 2007 pro. We can no longer save some Excel files to network shares. If the share is removed and re-created, the problem goes away for about half an hour then re-appears. Once a file has this problem, it cannot be re-saved - but it can be saved locally.
I have monitored the file locks on the server and notice that when the file is opened, it shows as being open and locked correctly. On files that have the problem, when a save is attempted, the file no longer shows as being open even though it is. Files that are not affected correctly show as being open until closed. This problem does not appear to affect word or any other application. Also affected files cannot e deleted - even after a re-boot. Problem is not limited to any one share or user.
Have tried disabling Mcafee Anti virus enterprise on both server and client machines.

Would really appreciate any help with this
