The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

All Office Programs crashing with error message

I am trying to help someone who lives across the country from me figure out a serious problem she is having w/Microsoft Office 2003.  I copied and pasted her email, I hope it's not too long, but wanted to enclose everything she has been through.  I have researched here and Microsoft and can not find any solution.  I did come across something on here about conflicting IRQ's, but I'm not even sure how to go about figuring out if that is a problem?
Thanks for any help you can give.

"I've been trying all the MS Office Pro programs and just got to Outlook.  It opened and then I tried to forward a message and got THE error message "Microsoft Office Outlook has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience... etc." when I moved mouse to the top menu bars.  When I closed it, it took me to MS WORD with another error message "Microsoft Office Word is currently recovering your documents." and then THE error message popped up "Microsoft Office Word has encountered a problem and needs to close....."  Next try I got "Microsoft Word is set to be your e-mail editor, Word is unavailable, not installed, or is not the same version as Outlook.  The Outlook e-mail editor will be used instead."    So now I seem to be able to e-mail you.

I'm going to send this before I try to do a restore - just in case that really messes things up.  Then I'll send you the results either on this computer or on John's.

Could you please send me the things that you think may be wrong that you thought might be incompatible or in conflict.  I can't remember the letters you said.

Thanks so much for your help.

The history of my computer problem:

Dell XPS 720 computer purchased 12/07
Have the 3 year extended warrantee for parts and help.
Had to replace the mother board in just a few days because Ethernet would not stay plugged in.
Had to replace the video card a few days later.
both replace with "refurbished parts".

Using Microsoft Office Pro 2003

Tues. 3/11 - everything seemed to be working well.  I used Outlook, some draw programs and MS Publisher extensively.  It all closed down just fine.
Wed. 3/12 - Opened computer as usual and typed into Access a list of books - no problem.  Closed it.
Opened "The Font Thing" to view fonts saved on my external drive (Maxtor) - no problem.
Opened Publisher so I could compare my font lists that I had created in Publisher and I got THE error message "Microsoft Office Publisher has encountered a problem...."
Tried several times - tried Word - tried WordPad - all with the same results.
Tried to repair program from CD
Did uninstall and reinstall - no results!
Called "computer geek" son and he told me to call Dell - he's in California now with his college friend who is a trouble shooter for Microsoft.
Called Dell help line.  After 2 hr on phone and several Dell Connect sessions the tech talked to his supervisor.  Then he asked me about the Office disk.  When he found out it was not OEM but a volume license he refused to help me any more.  He said I had to call Microsoft. During the 2 hours we did uninstalls, reinstalls, turned off things in msconfig, turned things back on, etc. Somewhere along the line we got messages about Normal.dot being corrupted and a question about having Word create a new one.  So he went hunting it and found one in my saved files on the Maxtor (saved from my old 98 computer).  He didn't even seem to realize that it wasn't on the C drive until I told him.  So he then tried to make a new one on C drive.  Nothing helped!  Called Lisa!

Today-Thurs 3/13 - Started up computer

Opened WordPad and got "WordPad-MFC has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.  If you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost  Please tell Microsoft about this problem.  We have created an error report........."  clicked don't send.  Error message:  The instruction of "0x5f801088" referenced memory at "0x00000004" The memory could not be "read" Click on OK to terminate the program"  (OK)

Opened Access - will tripe in the forms but when I moved the mouse towards the menu bars above I got this message: Microsoft Office Access has encountered a problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience......"  After a few more tries it won't even open a file - just gives THE error message.

Opened Excel - opened file and typed ok but when I tried to see page setup I got THE error message.

Opened Info path - don't know much about it but it seems to work.

Opened Power Point - seemed to work well until I tried to open Page Set or Print Preview up from file menu.   Each time I got THE error message:

Opened Publisher - Won't open ANY file, new, mine, or premade.  Immediately got THE error message when I try.

Opened Word - Immediately got THE error message plus "Microsoft Office Word is currently recovering your documents." - with a "time bar" and then THE error message again."
