Question

Excel displays "not enough memory" when opening a specific file

Asked by: kind4me

Here is the set up:
I have a user that has created an excel file with about 300 fields on average across 5 sheets inside of a workbook in office 2003.  He sent the file to a mac user and when the mac user (OS 10.5, high end mac) tried to open the file in office 2004 he got "not enough memory".  The user sent the excel file to me and I opened with office 2003 on an XP computer with no issue.  I copy and pasted each sheet of the file into a new workbook, renamed it and sent it a different mac user.  The second mac user, (OS 10.3 high end 2 years ago) running office 2004, same thing.

Both mac users are able to open other excel files from other office 2003 windows xp users without an issue.  all windows users can open the excel files without a problem.

The file in question is less then a meg in size.

Could you post your file? I've got a Mac with OS 10.5 and Excel 2004, in addition to various Windows flavors.

I would love to, but it contains senstive data.  Is there a specific test you were thinking of doing with the file.  I could emulate and post results.

I was going to check:
1) Which add-ins are were using (if any)?
2) Is there any VBA code?
3) Do the scrollbars extended far beyond your data?
4) Are there array formulas?
5) Is the workbook corrupted? I have a file repair utility I can use.
6) Is the workbook Shared (using the Tools...Share Workbook menu item)?

1) I have tried to open on two macs and both failed. I can open on a windows computers with the standard add ins
2) No
3) No
4) What are array formulas?
5) No, I have copied all data to a new workbook to make sure that there was no corruption in the data

Microsoft's KnowledgeBase suggests a few possibilities:

Too many fonts on charts http://support.microsoft.com/kb/179679/en-us <<"Not enough memory" error message when you add a chart to an Excel workbook>>

Workbook contains one or more ActiveX (Controls ToolBox) controls http://support.microsoft.com/kb/905677/en-us <<Description of some of the differences between Excel 2004 for Mac and Excel 2003>>

Array formulas: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/181285/en-us <<Maximum array size in Excel for Mac>>

It turns out is was data verification.  I have no idea why data verification would cause this, but I turned it off and no more error.

By "data verification", did you mean the Validation feature listed under the Data menu? I'd like to know some more of the details in case the question arises again in the future.

WTF, I meant to award the point to byundt, sorry dude I will make a case in the lounge

Yes, I highlighted the worksheet and went to data -> validation and it asked if I wanted to clear the vailidation since there was more then one on each sheet.  I said ok saved it and sent it the mac user.  Opened the file with no issue.

kind4me,
You did award me the points on the question, but I put on my Page Editor hat and undid your efforts. I don't believe any of the links I posted suggested that data validation would explain your symptoms. So the only proper way of handling things was to give you the credit for solving your own problem.

No need to do that, the points are a thank you for assistance, so stop being so modest and take the points, they are useless anyway.

Not to worry I am a "quailifed expert" so I get unlimited points and even if I didn't I have been a member since 99 and have asked 20 questions.
