Office 2003 documents take long to open when double-clicked

Hello experts,

I seem to be having problems with 2 users out of the 25 users in a network.    Whenever they try to open Office documents (doesn't matter whether it's Excel, PowerPoint or Word), they get an hourglass and it takes generally around a minute before anything is opened.   This generally happens when they double-click on the document directly on the hard drive or on the network share.   This can also happen as an attachment in their email (Outlook 2003 is the email program).

However, the delays in opening the document does NOT happen when they open them directly from within the respective application (i.e. File > Open > document).

I've been looking around for various solutions to my scenario but have not come across any that have helped.   I've also disabled real-time AV/spyware programs to no avail.   The odd thing is that it's only happening to two users.   Only other thing I can add is that all users are in a roaming profile environment.
Steps that I've done to troubleshoot:
Rebuilt the affected user's local and roaming profile just to try to fix it.
Ran Detect and Repair on Office 2003 applications.
     Uninstalled and reinstalled Office 2003.
Tried logging in on a good machine and it seems that their profile somewhat affects the speed of opening too.  It doesn't take a minute, but it's still noticably slower compared to another user on the same machine.

That's all I can think of for now and this is really baffling.  Any insight would be appreciated, as always. :)

Thanks!
