I have looked around here and other places and I am not seeing anything that seems to apply to my problem. This may actually be associated with another problem I am trying to solve.
I have a group of inside sales people that use Word and Excel templates to create new requests. I have created shortcuts on their start menus to the templates. They click the template they want and it opens a new document for them to fill out. These template are saved locally under thier profiles in Documents and Settings. Thier "My Documents" folders however are housed on the server. The document actually opens right up but will sit there for 10-30 seconds waiting for the embedded graphic to pop up. It is however eratic in nature. It either pops right in with the document or there is the wait.
Why I say this may be related to another issue, is we are seeing a couple other "network" issues. We are seeing some very slow network drive "reaction" times - again eratically. The will use windows explorer to browse a directory and it will take several seconds to respond when simply viewing or moving files. At most there will be a 100 files in these directories. The other issue is that Outlook will slow to a crawl and start "waiting on Exchange server". These happen at the same time as each other. The template issue is hit or miss on being at the same time but usually it is.
Everyone is on XP, 2.8 GHz P4s, Gig ethernet, 1 GB RAM - It has not been an issue until the past few months. I have checked the switches and for the volume of traffic, errors are truly minimal and I don't see a lot of retries or anything like that. I am guessing an update caused the issue. Whether it is MS update or something like our Antivirus is the question. We run McAfee AV for Small Businesses. The equipment is all solid. The servers and Desktops are all HP series and the networking gear is exclusively Cisco. We are also running the Kaseya agent for remote monitoring and access.
