How to send formated Email via Outlook, using Mail Merge from Excel

I have been sending newsletters to my opted in contacts in Outlook, linking to an Excel spreadsheet.  The merge function works fine, however I lose all formatting options- even the ability to include Bold or Italics.  The message also comes through with strange text wrapping- short and long lines.

Is there anything I can do so to give me control of the message format?  Or is there an add-in or stand alone program that would give me better functionality?

Outlook 2000, Windows XP SP2.
