The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Microsoft Office 2003 hangs when trying to browse a specific network share. Same share is fine in other aps and Windows Explorer

Asked by j_65_uk in Microsoft Office Suite, Windows XP Operating System, File Servers

Hi,

I have a user who is getting a strange problem. There is a network share she uses that when she tries to open and browse through using the open or save dialogues in ANY Microsoft Office 2003 application, the app just hangs for about a minute, and does this everytime she opens a folder.

Now the strange part - that network share works at full speed for other applications on the machine and when you browse it using Windows Explorer. It ONLY affects Microsoft Office applications.

Her machine is Windows XP, SP2, all patches etc. Last night our Microsoft updates came down - possible link?

The network share is on a powerful Windows 2003 server, also fully patched, in the same building, same subnet etc. Other users nearby have no issues...

I've tried rebooting multiple times, I've removed Symantec (which has been linked to this issue elsewhere) and I've disconnected ALL network drives - still no joy... Other references to this issue always seem to be caused by either Symantec or a disconnected network drive, both of which I've eliminated... Anyone got any insights or suggestions?
