Question

Slow opening links from Outlook in IE7

Asked by: kielders

I am trying to open links from messages in Outlook 2003 and there is a delay of between 30 and 40 seconds. It is not always the case - somethimes they open straight away and sometimes they take longer.

So far I have tried the following:

Disabled add ons
Disabled AV
Disabled Phishing Filter
Checked DDE/File types opeining info for URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol
Checked settings in Control Panel for the program access and defaults
Uninstalled and re-installed IE7

Can anyone reccomend anything else I can try?
I have also noticed a slowing of Word documents opening when opened as attachments from 2003.

Few things you can check or try:

Is Office 2003 SP3 installed?
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=E25B7049-3E13-433B-B9D2-5E3C1132F206&displaylang=en

Is this a POP3 account or an Exchange Account?

If an Exchange Account, check to see if Cached Exchange Mode is on
Tools>Account Settings>Open Account Settings> Right under Exchange Server Name is the box Ticked that says "Use cached Exchange Mode"?

If it is selected, and you dont use it, turn it off.

If the above is okay, see if this still happens when opening Outlook in Safe Mode
Starting with Outlook closed:
Start>Run>Outlook.exe /safe

If it does not, its likely to be an Add-In Causing the problem

If this doesnt help try the following Command Line Switch
Again, with Outlook already closed:
Start>Run>outlook.exe /cleanprofile

Hi
I have tried your suggestions - and they haven't worked unfortunately.
I have SP3
It is a POP3 account if that helps.
I turned all add ons off and also opened in Safe Mode and still had the problem.

Also I have noticed that it only has the slowness sometimes - after changing a setting it will open the document fine the first time - then when I close Outlook and try and open the document again it opens very slowly. Also if I have already opened the attachment then closed it and try again it opens with no delay the second time (but not if I close Outlook between openings).

Do you have ITunes installed?

If so, in Outlook, try going to Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options
The go to COM Add-Ins and uncheck iTunes Outlook Addin.
Hope this helps... worked for me!

by: kieldersPosted on 2008-09-16 at 03:23:45ID: 22486714

No - iTunes is not installed - I had already tried disabling all add-ins - including COM add-ins - I did them one by one and all together but that made no difference.

I wish it was iTunes - would be a whole lot easier and less frustrating!

Thanks for your help so far!

Just curious:

Copy the link from Outlook and paste it into Word.

Then try to open the link. Is it also slow?

I reinstalled Outlook and the links problem seems to have cleared up.

(I tried installing IE8 and it gave me more problems than it was worth! Conflicts with other programs etc.!)

HOWEVER, the problem opening attachments (mainly word and excel) remain they take anywhere up to half a minute and beyond, are there any suggestions on this?
I have emptied the temp int folder.
Tried it with AV switched off.

OK I think I solved it by emptying the OLK Folder:

Start, Run, and typing %temp% in the run window, and then deleted all files that I could there.

by: amser666Posted on 2008-10-09 at 07:59:02ID: 22679043

I dont have an OLK folder?? I have an OLC folder in there which is for Outlook Connector. (lets me view hotmail emails in my outlook)

Still trying to work this one out!

I have found that this problem rears its ugly head after I do a search through my emails. As I have emails dating back to 2002! Could the overloading of a log file or the like be causing this!?

by: kieldersPosted on 2008-11-03 at 07:01:16ID: 22867481

The problem still remains with opening attachments and links on this machine. Does anyone have any other suggestions? It seems that it is an intermitent problem and I had not fixed it at all!

Try running SCANPST.EXE to check for errors in your pst mail file.

by: kieldersPosted on 2008-11-03 at 07:25:30ID: 22867703

I tried that - it found 78 errors but then "fixed" them and I am still having the problem.

I have done this and it is still a problem

by: naftalipPosted on 2009-04-29 at 01:50:25ID: 24258356

I had the same problem. It was maddening.

After lot of time I've solved it this way:
1. Open regedit, go to HKCR\htmlfile\shell\opennew
2. Delete the ddeexec subkey (or change its name)
3. In the command subkey, replace the "-nohome" to "%1"
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with HKCR\htmlfile\shell\open
