Question

Office/Outlook 2007: "Either there is no default mail client or..."

Asked by: akahan

On my WIndows XP Pro SP3 machine, I installed Microsoft Office 2007 today, including Outlook 2007.

However, I do not use Outlook for email; I prefer to continue to use Eudora.  Eudora is set as the default email client in my installations of Firefox, and Internet Explorer.

Approximately every ten minutes, I am getting a popup "error box".  In the top border, it says "Microsoft Office Outlook," and the body of the error message is:  "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request.  Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client."

I do not wish to set Outlook as the default mail client, or even configure the email component of Outlook at all, as I want to continue using Eudora.  It appears that something on my system is trying to send emails, calling Outlook, and finding that Outlook is not configured, and then complaining.   How can I figure out what is doing this?  I guess it must be part of Office 2007, because prior to installing Office 2007, nothing was trying to send messages through Outlook.

Any help?

That it is happening every 10 minutes may be indicative. Open Outlook. Go to Tools -> Options. Check through the Mail tabs and settings, particularly the one that wants to send immediately. Then beside it, send/receive settings and uncheck the boxes to check for email and every so many minutes. You need to review all the settings, but it is probably these settings that are popping up.   ..... Thinkpads_User

I think you may be misunderstanding the problem.

I think the problem is occurring because some OTHER (presumably Microsoft) application (not Outlook) is trying to invoke Outlook to send a message on its behalf.   I want to figure out what application is doing this, and stop it.   I do NOT want to set Outlook so that it's the default mail program, or so that it handles mail in any particular way.  I want to stop the OTHER application, whichever it is, from trying to send messages and calling Outlook to do so.

Thanks; I've now tried setting Outlook to be the default mail program from within Outlook (even though Outlook doesn't actually have any email accounts set up), and we'll see if that makes a difference.

Hm, what seems to have fixed it is setting Outlook to be the default mail client in Internet Explorer.
