He has Office Standard Edition 2003 and the Compatiblity Pack for the 2007 Office system installed.
The OS is XP.

Try changing the file allocations for the xlsx file types.
Go to windows explorer, find the aspx file, right click, choose open with and select Excel 2003 - then select the always use this program to open..... etc
Hopefully that will do it
