I am logged-in as Administrator and the setup progress bar progresses slowly for the first ~35%/5 minutes, and then it rapidly finishes and I get the failed installation message. I have successfully installed the same file on XP and Vista workstations on the network.
I am thinking it has something to do with the Remote Desktop Users profiles regarding the Office installation... But then again, Microsoft has not posted anything of use that I can find.
I'm going to chime in here and say I'm experiencing the same problem. WSUS told me this morning that it failed to install over the weekend, so I jumped onto the box and manually kicked it off; only to get a progress bar for a while and then a window offering to send an Error Report.

I have successfully installed SP2. I spoke with Microsoft Support - this is a known issue. There is a hotfix for this which will allow Server 2003 to apply a patch of this size.

I downloaded SP2 this morning and installed it on my Vista computer. It is a very large file (over 300Mb) and took about 1/2 hour to install (very fast computer).
Did you trying re-downloading the service pack (maybe the download was bad)?
Did it fail at the very beginning? or after some time trying to install?
