Cannot empty clipboard - Excel 2007

Hi there
I get this error intermittently, usually in Excel:

On trying to copy a cell, I get the message Cannot Empty the Clipboard.

(I would paste the screenshot but of course I cant because the clipboard has a problem).

I have been copying and pasting cells but nothing especially large. At other times I copy large stuff and have no problem.

I have looked around the web but most solutions depend on being able to open the clipboard via Run> clipboard.exe, which is disabled, this is part of our desktop build restriction,

The only way I have found to get rid of this is to log off and start again. Closing excel does not solve the problem. Obviously this is somewhat inconvenient and a bit reminiscent of the ubiquitous advice of 90s helpdesks.

Any suggestions appreciated!

are you using remote desktop/terminal? Another thing that might mess with clipboard is if you have some kind of software that monitors clipboard (GetRight, FlashGet etc.) If you have some 3d party programs linked to excel, suspect that as well.

"Update: I still haven't found a permanent solution but I found another thing that seems to help. In Excel 2007, from the "home" tab, the first thing on the left is the clipboard tool panel. Expand the panel to view the clipboard and in the clipboard you might find "cannot empty clipboard" as an entry. Empty the clipboard, keep the panel open for a second or two while you do a few cut and pastes/drags etc. and then the bogey seems to go away."
