Question

How to remove the "non-commercial use" tag in Office 2007 products.

Asked by: IdealSolutionsNW

I own a legit version of Office Ultimate 2007.  I previously had it installed on my old computer, then I bought a new computer, installed it on my new computer, and removed it off my old computer.  But now the version on my new computer, although it is the only version installed on any computer at this point, reads "non-commercial use".

I am guessing this is b/c when I registered it Microsoft recognized that it had been installed on another computer at some point.  But how can I make the software realize it is the only copy installed and to get rid of the "non-commercial use" tag???

Hi IdealSolutionsNW,

There's no way of removing the Tag..only to get a new version.

Hi IdealSolutionsNW,
is the Office a full version or OEM? Did you have any preinstalled trial versions on your new computer?

by: IdealSolutionsNWPosted on 2009-09-10 at 08:41:49ID: 25301324

There was no pre-installed version on my new computer.  And it is Office Ultimate the full version.

Like I said, when I installed it on my old computer two years ago there was no "non-commercial use" tag on it.  But as soon as I installed it on my new computer, the "non-commercial use" tag showed up.  So I am led to believe it's because this is the second time I have installed it.

However, I would have thought that removing it from my old computer would have done the trick, but it did not.

Oh, and Gary, you are not entirely correct.

You can actually get rid of the text, but when you do so manually through the registry, it also takes away your ability to store documents in the recent documents window.

But here is how to remove the text through the Registry:
Make sure you have opened all the Office products at least once in order to create a registry key. Under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0 then select your product (let's take Word, for example) and change the WordName key to take out the non-commercial use tag. Go to Edit > Permissions, click on Advanced, uncheck "Inherit from parent...", select copy, and remove the "Full Control" ability from administrators and the user you're logged in as. Click OK until you're back to the main form and do the same for PowerPoint, Excel, and OneNote.

I don't think that it is because you have not uninstalled the product before. If activation is not possible (licence activated too many times), Microsoft would just turn the activation request down and instruct you to call them.

I once had a similar case where the computer seller installed a trial version and before selling the computer, decided to uninstall. The uninstallation did not report any errors, however, the subsequent installation showed the non-commercial tag. Could you check if there are any other installation packages than the one for your Office? see here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/

Obviously, if you installed your OS yourself, this will not help.

It would help if you read the Software Licensing Terms:
1.Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Program Name Options, where Program Name is the name of the program you are in, for example, Word Options.
2.Click Resources, and then click About.
3.Click View the Microsoft Software License Terms

The terms for standard full retail licenses for Office 2007 Ult allow two simultaneous installations on computers owned by the licensee, so the red herring of "installed on my old computer" is not the reason.

As others have posted, if there was a Trial Version of Office Home and Student 2007 on the computer and then Offcie Ultimate was installed on top of it, the noncommercial use tag might have been erroneously inherited from H&S.

Was this Office Ultimate 2007 purchased under the Ultimate Steal Deal promotion from Microsoft for collge students?
