Question

Slow PC after upgrade to Office 2007

Asked by: omberli

Upgraded a few PCs for a customer from MS Office 2000 to Office 2007. During install I was told to install a windows search module. This was done.

After this upgrade one PC seems to have disk activity all the time, and it is a bit slower than before. Another PC is very slow. Starting IE or Mozilla may take a minute or longer, and it is almost impossible to work on it. It used to be quite fast (it is a HP Workstation with plenty of ram - WinXP Pro.

Other symptoms on this very slow PC are: When startion Outlook (that normally connects to an IMAP server), there is a window askine for LDAP info (Server: NULL, User: NULL, Port 3286). No LDAP server is in use or configured. The other PCs don't display this window. In the event log there are repeatedly 3026 and 3024 errors from Windows Search Service. There is also a 3036 warning from this service.
I also noticed two processes running: PC Angel and SeaPort that I haven't seen before....

Any ideas how to get this PC up tp speed again?

Uninstall Windows Search.  It is a HUGE waste of resources relative to the minimal gain it provides and is known for causing extreme slowdown of any PC it is on.

to expound on what dpavlick said, the slowdown is typically caused by Windows Search indexing the hard drive.  If your hard drive is pegged, you'd be lucky to get anything to load or run regardless of how much RAM you have.  In regards to those two processes, SeaPort is part of the Windows Search module and should go away when you uninstall it.  I've only ever heard of PC Angel as a backup program.

Thanks for the info. Uninstalled Windows search on the slowest PC (the HP Workstation). It is still very slow. Has started a drive defrag to see if it may have any effect. The errors in Application Event log seems to have stopped. Any other ideas?  Some cleanup needed after the un-install of Win Search?

The LDAP screen still shows up. Is this a separate issue? It only shows on one of the PCs where Office was upgraded.

Are you running XP or ???  Not sure why LDAP is on this computer and not the others.  Did you check Add/Remove Programs for anything related to LDAP and remove it?  I would think it is partially a separate issue, but it sounds like LDAP is searching for the LDAP server(s) which could be eating your resources.  The key would be to figure out what program(s) are making the request for LDAP and reconfigure or even uninstall/reinstall those programs.

Try running CCleaner, maybe Disk Cleanup, then run Defrag again.  After awhile though, it points more toward doing a full rebuild of the system, but if you can find the source of the LDAP issue, then you should be able to just uninstall that program, then reinstall if necessary with the LDAP option not selected.

From http://www.msoutlook.info/question/173

"Usually when you get this dialog it means you have just finished upgrading from Outlook 2000 or previous or moved from Outlook Express to Outlook instead. In those cases, it sometimes happens that the LDAP service is left in Outlook after transferring your contacts. If that happens, you can remove it manually.

Outlook 2007
Tools-> Account Settings&-> tab Address Book-> select the Internet Directory Service (LDAP)-> button Remove"

Have tried these and a couple of other suggestions. System performance has improved, but still slower than when the old Office 2000 was installed. Will investigate further. Thanks!
