microsoft office professional plus 2010 encountered an error during setup
On this particular Dell Optiplex 320, I have done a fresh install of Windows 7 Professional and run windows updates. I then go to install Office Professional Plus 2010 and the install runs, but at the end I get the error message "microsoft office professional plus 2010 encountered an error during setup". No specific error information is given and the install is rolled back.
I have reinstalled Windows 7 twice, always with the same result. Any ideas?
I have read on forums that one can try renaming the windows help folder and altering the permissions on the installer directory. I have tried these already and made no difference.

Check the eventlog for errors relating to windows installer and post any you find please. (application log)

Wesley: Tried that too. No luck.
Lecretia: Checked there too. No errors. Just a lot of valid entried for installing the product and then uninstalling the product.

Ya, I always do a full install. Seen the 1st article. Seen second too, but WMIdiag won't run on Win 7.
Try seaching for a file called rgstrtn.lck and rename / delete it then rerun the install.
Tried resinstalling Windows Installer??
And/or this ---
Step 1) Run command msiexec /unregister
Run command msiexec /regserver
Step 2) Give full permissions to the folders c:/windows/installer
Give Full permission to folder c:/windows/temp

Lec: Thought it might have been. As I say in my original post, I've removed/renamed that folder and tried. Still fails.
Try renaming the ‘Microsoft Help’ folder and then install Office.
Follow the steps given below to rename the Microsoft Help Folder:
1. Click on Start > Run > Type %Programdata% and Click OK
2. Rename the 'Microsoft Help' folder as 'Microsoft Help. OLD'
Another Suggestion:
It sounds like you have a corrupt profile. Have you tried creating a new profile and then reinstalling it Office?

Opps just read the part about renaming the help folder in your orginal post... sorry my bad.
Two more things to try.
1. Right click the setup.exe file and select properties, compatibility. Check the "Run this program as Administrator" checkbox. Try the install again.
2. Leave option 1 in place for this one. Turn of UAC entirely and reboot - try install again.
This seems to me to be like a permissions problem somewhere on the system.... Try those and let us know.

I've been trying to install it under the domain admin account this whole time. Nontheless, I did the run as administrator and same result. I also tried running it under local admin account and same.
UAC has been off for all attempts - sorry, forgot to mention that.
I also did another windows 7 reinstall and this time did NOT patch up the system and attempted to install Office - same result, so def not a patch screwing things up.

I downloaded and was able to install the Office Trial version without issue. I now suspect KMS. I will test and advise.
