Hmm,

According to a support article from MS it seems that

The removal of custom XML markup is the result of a United States court ruling on December 22, 2009. Customers who purchase or license Word 2010 will find that the software does not include a particular custom XML tagging implementation.

Article:
Custom XML mapping is removed when you open a document in Word 2010

Yes, i already know that, but is there like a workaround, plugin or solution for this?

What i do having a virtual machine with word 2003 installed and edit the file there, but it is really inconvenient.
Apparently there is. As I was searching through the Word options at the bottom you have Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > Privacy Options > Document Inspector > custom XML data

see if this works.
What exactly should i try? i already have all the check boxes checked.
To untick Custom XML data, sorry for that.
But after seeing this article just now it might not work

Yep, it still removes the XML tags.

Is there another program i could use to edit the document and preserve the XML tags??, i just dont want to have to keep turning on a VM every time i want to edit the document

Thanks, but x4w doesn't support encrypted documents, so i guess im stuck with Office 2003
Found another blog entry, here.

The author says:

.DOCX, .DOCM and .XML files are the file types that are affected. .DOC, the default format for 2003 is not affected.

and also:

All versions of Word sold by Microsoft in the US  after January 10, 2010 (not just English) will remove custom XML markup when opening files.

but wikipedia says
- Office 2007 was released January 30, 2007
-- Office 2007 Service Pack 1 was released on December 11, 2007
--- Service Pack 2 was released on April 28, 2009

Therefore you could use Office 2007 SP2 and should have custom XML.
The idea is that Office 2007 should run without the need for a VM.

After that there is no other option.
I Had a version of Office 2007 that saved the XML tags, but after doing some updates it starting removing them.

Anyway thanks for your help!
Using x4w should be the right way to go, unfortunately it doesnt work with my document.

Thanks
No problem.

KB974631 for Word 2007 this is the update that was done in order to comply.

I think you could stop Office from autoupdate, as with windows, or you could select every update to be installed except this one, and Office 2007 Service Pack 3
