Excel Question

Hello All,

I am giving 500 points for this because I really need the best answer (s)
I have a excel file that has several toggle buttons and command buttons. And it all looks ok when i am viewing in the PC. Issue starts when I try to project the file n my PC through a workplace projector on to a big screen. The zoom appears to be crappy then. All the buttons don't appear of same size, when I click on one button, it becomes much smaller in size than the rest of not-clicked buttons and overall appears to be mess. (which is not visible when I am just viewing the file through my PC.

Any useful suggestions or toning I have to do? so that the excel file looks just the same in PC screen and the projector screen.

Thank You

I have no clue where is this issue originating from, in that I can only rely on my favorite EE  experts to save me, as the presentation aspect of the file is equally important as the workability of the file
set your monitor resolution to the 600x400.  arange the way you like... then it should look the same when projecting...
c'mon...that's a good answer right? ;)
Stare directly into the projector bulb for 9 minutes.

you'll never see the file messed up again.. and it will look the same on the computer as the projector screen  :)
Actually I would go with 600x800 though.. 400 could cause issues :)

this is the best answer now!

Thank you Dave for the reply..

Few observations:
If you are seeing your buttons move around (assuming they are ActiveX controls, correct?) then this is a problem.  ActiveX controls are notorious for giving quirky results - changing sizes, disappearing, etc.
Dave - The Ole objects are the suspects - yes they tend to behave funny if I change the screen resolution. Get bigger and bigger as I click on them. Closing and reopening the file in the new screen resolution resolves it, you are right :)

Question:  If you toggle back from the projector onto your laptop/pc, do the controls look correct or have they actually shifted/changed size?  This is important in diagnosis, re: have the controls messed up or is it just a projection issue.
They look correct if I toggle back from projector to pc laptop. Do you think excel zoom has to be changed or anything. Currently the excel display sheet is at 100%

I will be further testing again and again with different projectors and different settings. I am noting down the observations.
For "quirky" active X issues, either don't use them, or read my article and leverage my utility, here:
https://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Office_Productivity/Office_Suites/MS_Office/Excel/A_5315-Dealing-with-unintended-Excel-Active-X-resizing-quirks-VBA-code-simulates-self-correction.html

Just to confirm the obvious.  On the projection, the buttons are all messed up, but if you toggle back to the PC and look there (either one display, or while displaying on the screen) then they are OK?  This IS strange, as resolution would just make things look bigger or smaller - more detailed or granular.  Showing buttons change shape once clicked, I would have previously imagined that that would have ended up being a physical change shown on your PC when you toggled back.

You can try ZOOM.  You can also try to set the PC resolution to the projection resolution just to see if the annoying effect goes away.

Actually you are right , yup the shapes stay in that messed up mode even if i unhook the projector from pc...then I have to just close the file and reopen to see the original size so to speak.
Your article is very very useful, i will go through it

Thank you Dave :)
If you close and reopen that's not the same thing. You have to toggle back without closing the file. Or save then see

Thank you Dave for following up,
so..yeah..lets says the shape is bigger than it should right, then all I do is close the file and try to reopen it, then it opens up in the regular size, not the enlarged size

other thing that I noticed is that when the excel file is open and my current resolution screen is 1024 X 768 and I change it to 800 X 600 or any other resolution (while the excel file is open), then when i click on the toggle button  - it behaves funny and grows bigger with every click :)
So at that point, If I close the file and then reopen it, the toggle is normal

something is activeX isn't it? :)

Oh, and BTW, I am not saving the file in the entire process - its the same file
So with the accepted solution, is this fixed?

Just curious as I found this one very interesting.

Yes, it is SeaSenor, Dave guided me in the right direction as you saw by his high quality of responses and detailed explanations , I narrowed down where the issue was. So i think his resolution pointed me in the right direction. I will not use the activeX buttons now atleast for this type of excel file.
Great.

I was waiting to see if it repeated the behavior on a different computer/laptop connected to the same projector, or same computer with a different projector.

Guess it's like the owl and the tootsie roll pop....  the world may never know.
