Need to kill connection to shared .xls file

A user needs to make changes to a file that seems to have been left open by another user. They are getting the "*.xls is locked for editing" message. The user who has opened the file is in a remote location and cannot be contacted. How can I kill their connection to the file?

Try and clear the local temp directory of the first user eg:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp
