The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Hello, I have a user that is frequently receiving the above error message. I know that this is not a memory issue as the laptop has 2 gigs of ram. The user is running Windows Vista Ultimate and Microsoft Office 2007 Pro. He is working in a domain environment with active directory deployed. His My Documents folder and another folder (P:\Projects) are both setup for syncroniztion with the server. The My Docs folder is set up using folder redirect on the domain controller Group Policy. The P:\ is a mapped drive that points to a share on the domain controller and is set up for Offline Syncronization. The error is not a consistent error, another words it is not an every day occurence, but is frequent enough to be a hassle. I received a call from him today saying he was having a problem with opening a file and receivng this error message. I logged into the server remotely, and emailed him the file that he was having a problem with. He saved it to his Desktop, and was able to open it once. When he tried to open it again, he received antoher message similar to the above. Any ideas? If I have not provided enough information, please tell me what you need and I will. Thanks in Advance.

See the note about your error message half way down this link:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=828041

does that help?

I know you said they are using Office 2007, but see the part about Word Art from an older version. Perhaps your client has a signature or letterhead that contains Word Art created from a previous version and whenever they open that type of file, they get the error?

If so, they should eliminate the Word Art, or recreate it in Word 2007 (if possible).

...just something to check.

HighTechGeek,
Thanks for the response, but no, I dont think it is related. Notice that I mentioned this client is running Office Pro 2007 and the KB article is related to Office 2003. I did read the entire article though to make sure. I also took it into consideration, as I do have 2 users on the network that are running Office 2003, but I know that they are up to date. I run updates manually on a weekly nasis for this client. Thanks for the try though!

HighTechGeek,
I did see the word art reference, but he has not set up a signature as of yet on the computer. Thanks.

Is the My Docs folder redirected to a drive letter or a UNC path. I find that the UNC path works better for folder redirection.
Assisted Solution

05.08.2008 at 02:35PM PDT, ID: 21528679
It is set to use the U:\ and the path is "\\file-server\Users\username"

05.08.2008 at 02:54PM PDT, ID: 21528800
Try changing the redirect to the UNC path.

I have also seen this error related to the following:
1. permissions and authentication issues.
2. an excessive amount of fonts installed (>600, etc.)
3. corrupt Msoprefs.232 and Msoclip.232 files - delete them and they will be rebuilt
4. Word Art
5. embedded Org Charts, tables or graphs

After he is unable to open the file, can the file be opened by others?

It could also be a corrupted template. If it is using the normal.dot template, you can delete it and Word will recreate it the next time it is used.

NOTE: Deleting the template will revert all customized formatting back to defaults for future new documents.

HighTechGeek,
Thanks on both comments, I am waiting for response from my client now via email to tell me the name of the particular file so that I can verify if it can be opened by someone else or not. I will try with Office 2007 first then the Office 2003 to see. I will also try deleting the normal.dot template file and see if that works. I will update when I have results, thanks.
