Question

Tools/Options/Edit Settings going back to the default when MS Word is closed.

Asked by: tcoc

Okay this is driving me nuts.  I have several documents that I use all the time.  2 options that are a must have for me are Tools/Options/View/Formatting Marks and deselecting the Tools/Options/Edit/"When selecting, automatically select the entire word".

These used to work, but now every time I save and exit, these options get reset.  Maybe I’m imagining things, but I seem to recall these options stayed as set prior to installing SP2.

While I’m at it, how can I get the clipboard to stop popping up whenever I use Ctrl+C to copy something?  I have to close it down every time just to keep it out of the way.

Thanks for the help,

tcoc

You may have an AutoExec macro somewhere that resets everything when you launch Word.  Look in your normal.dot and also in any templates in the Startup folder.

As for the clipboard, after you close it I believe it's three times, it will stay closed and not pop up.  If its the Paste Option you want to get rid of:
Unchecking Tools > Options > Edit > Show Paste Options buttons.

JOrzech,

I found the AutoExec macro in my Normal.dot.  How do I edit/change/delete it?  The option isn't available in the macro menu.

BTW, I narrowed down the occurance of this problem.  It only happens when I restart my PC.  If I close MS Word and then restart it, my options stay.  When I restart the pc, everything gets reset.  I am on a corporate network.  Do you think that they are doing something at startup?  Maybe some kind of macro reset in order to thwart MS Word viruses?

Thanks,

tcoc

I'm using MS Word 2000

Also, I don't see: Tools > Options > Edit >"Show Paste Options buttons"

If it's getting reset when you log off/on, then perhaps your network administrators are "pushing" the settings via Group Policy...

falvaro3,

This looks promising as a source:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE" -b –l

What do you think?

by: falvaro3Posted on 2004-11-12 at 06:33:16ID: 12565787

OSA is the exe for the office toolbar, and the switches are related to the autostartup of *it*, not Word, so I'm not sure what that'd have to do with setting/keeping Word settings:
•      -b
This switch starts the Office Shortcut Bar when it is used with the "-l" switch.*
•      -f
This switch opens the Open Office Document dialog box at startup.
•      -n
This switch opens the New Office Document dialog box at startup.
•      -s
This switch starts the specified screen saver at startup. Note that if there is no screen saver selected under Display in Control Panel, you receive a message stating this.
•      -o
This switch starts the Office Shortcut Bar.
•      -l
  Starts Find Fast.**

You might want to look at the Word startup switches, especially the /m switch, which prevents autoexec macros from running:
•      /a       Start Word and prevent add-ins and global templates (including the Normal template) from being loaded automatically. The /a switch also locks the setting files, that is the setting files cannot be read or modified if you use this switch.
•      /laddinpath       Start Word and then load a specific Word add-in.
•      /m       Start Word without running any AutoExec macros.
•      /mmacroname       Start Word and then run a specific macro. The /m switch also prevents Word from running any AutoExec macros.
•      /n       Start a new instance of Word with no document open. Documents opened in each instance of Word will not appear as choices in the Window menu of other instances.
•      /ttemplatename       Start Word with a new document based on a template other than the Normal template.
•      /w       Start a new instance of Word with a blank document. Documents opened in each instance of Word will not appear as choices in the Window menu of the other instances.
•      (no switch) A new Word window is opened with a blank document using the existing instance of the Word application.

falvaro3,

I think I found the problem and I appreciate all your help.  Your suggestions got me thinking about what could be resetting my options.  It turns out it was a program I was running to clean up my Internet Explorer and MS Office tracks:  IE Privacy Keeper 2.3

It does a good job on the tracks but unfortunately does the same for my preferences.  As soon as I uninstalled it - no more problems.  Maybe, I'll try it again later and see if there is a way to set up to leave my preferences alone.

Anyway, thanks again.
