Question

Make a Check Box on word doc

Asked by: Petrobras

Hello,

I am not an expert at word at all.  I do know that you can make a document with checkboxes.  I want to make a document that will allow a user to check the questions that have been answered.  I have read some posts and I found that you can add a check box through the forms toolbar.  I did this but in order to make it work you have to protect the document.  ONce the document is protected then the user can not add any comments anwhere on the form because everthing else is frozen except the ability to click on teh check box.

How can i make a check box that woudl allow the user to check and then also be able to edit the text?
Also the check box defaults to an "X" but I would need for it to be a check mark.
I seem to remember that the fax templates had this capability but to make a document out of the fax template was a troublesome.

Any ideas here?

Also, this docuemnt would be sent to customer so I would not want them to have to install anything to make the document work or protect or unprotect.  Just simple.

thank you

You need only protect the section containing the check box(es) and other forms fields.
You can't change the appearance.

You could add a check box which uses a tick instead of a cross from the Control Toolbox. This is an ActiveX control that is not particularly designed for a Word document. Documentation and experience is therefore somewhat less than for the Word form controls.

"I am not an expert at word at all."  Don't worry, your secret is safe with us ;)

Well, you have two options.  You can use the forms toolbar and protect the document.  The problem with that is that in order to modify other text in the document, you'd have to add text fields everywhere that you'd like them to enter text.  If you have text that you never want them to change, you'd put that in the document itself.  It can be a little confusing to set up if you're new to the idea of forms.

Your other option is to use the active x Control Toolbox stuff (Control Toolbox toolbar).  This allows you to put form elements on a page without having the document locked.  Their primary use is in conjunction with VBA.  However, if you just want a check box on the screen and don't want to put any code behind it, this might be a good option.

Once you add the check box (or other thing), you just have to turn off Design Mode to make the checkbox work (there'll be a little button on your control toolbox bar to turn off design mode).  Otherwise, it's treated as an object, not a check box (right click > Checkbox Object > Edit).  Just close the toolbars when you're done, save it and you're off to the races!  Just play around with it a bit and see if you get the hang of it.

Although dated (Word 97), here's an article to give you a little extra information:

Let me know if that's what you're looking for!

Thank you for the information.  Dopyiii, I like the idea of the control box and then turning off the design.  I did it and it works good.

The only thing I would want to change is the check mark to an "X" and make it larger and maybe make it red if that is possible?

by: dopyiiiPosted on 2005-10-27 at 11:15:15ID: 15173444

Hmmm.... I'll have to look into that.  You would have to add some VBA code behind it to make it work, but I'm not sure off the top of my head how to do that.

I'm pretty sure you can change the text to red, but I don't think you can change the check to an X.

I'll get back to you.

ok thank you very much.

In your question you asked to change the X in a Form field. That wasn't possible. The ActiveX uses a tick. That's one of the reasons that I suggested the ActiveX control, so I'm confused about which symbol you need.
You can't change the colour of the provided checkbox, but here is a free one where you can.

Graham, sorry for the confusion.  The check box in the tool box is the one I would now like to change to an "X" instead of the default check mark.

thank you

by: GrahamSkanPosted on 2005-10-27 at 16:30:26ID: 15175588

If you want a cross, use the FormField control. If you want a tick, then use the ActiveX control. You can't change either.

There may be other ActiveX controls from third parties, like the colour checkbox, that will change the check symbol.

This control claims to use an X, as well and having colour options.

Graham, if I downloaded the norexe.com link and I put the check box on the word doc then went to a computer that did not have this installed from the link then woud it work?

thanks

Graham, it seems that the link is not working.  Is it correct?

thank you

I haven't tried the norex control, but you would probably have to do the usual things, like install it in the System32 folder, register it, and add it as an Additional control.
