asked on

"Word Cannot save this file because it is already open elsewhere" Normal...cannot stop this message....Help.....Thanks

Hi Folks,
I have two machines running identical setups with regards to Office (office 2003). Word is not the email editor. This is what happens:

In our office we have a document management system from within which you can open a blank word document.

If a user opens word from the desktop and then opens a document from within the document managment system this error appears:

"Word Cannot save this file because it is already open elsewhere" Normal.dot....

This does not happen on the other machine (which has the exact same setup).
I just don't know where the problem is? Your help would be greatly appreciated.
It is not an Outlook issue, and not a network issue as alluded to in microsoft support.
Thanks again

Hi

Close out of Word

On the PC with the problem use the search to locate all instances of normal.dot

Delete all of them

Opening Word again will recreate a new normal.dot

maybe this will help

Try looking at the Task Manager for any instances of process --WINWORD.EXE-- close any that are open. I believe dopyiii has the right idea...

I've the behavior before and multiple instances of WINWORD.EXE in processes has been the culprit.
Hi thomaskilroy

What exactly did you do to fix the problem?

Did you do all the steps in this link? Or?
http://howtotroubleshoot.blogspot.com/2005/10/how-to-clean-word.html

Would word not create a new owner file everytime or?
