Browse All TopicsThere is a lady who, believe it or not, has been using Word for DOS. This is like a 1991 program.
Finally her antique-computer croaked. I WAS able to salvage her 1600 files.
When I try to open them is (a modern version of) Word, I get
"Select the encoding that makes your document readable"
"Text encoding"
"Windows (default)" or "MS-DOS" or "Other encoding" (and then a list containg Arabic and Baltic and many more)
I CAN open the files when I choose MS-DOS and I CAN read most of them.
However almost every file has this garbage at the very top:
1¾ « k NORMAL.STY GLYPHIX @ ¨…Ğ µ
5 November 1992
CoreStates Financial Corporation
510 Walnut Street
Philadelphia PA 19106
Actually the garbage looks different in Word but you get the idea.
I guess I need help with:
1) How can I definitively determine which program (or version of Word) created these files?
2) How can I convert them so I don't lose any data - and get rid of the junk at the top. A (very) few of the files seem unreadable.
Thank you.

I solved this one myself. com/Pages/ T1061_Conv erting_Wor d_for_DOS_ Documents. html
Go to this site.
http://wordtips.vitalnews.
Use a program called RTF_DOS.EXE.
It works great.
This program, I think, comes with Word 5.
