Question

Making right-to-left complex-script options in MS-Word go away

Asked by: George_T_SLC

I do not know why, but recently my MS-Word 2003 has begun allowing for right-to-left and "complex" scripts.  For instance, indentation is now labeled "Before text" and "After text" instead of "Left" and "Right."  The underline function is no longer on the main page for "Modify Style," having been pushed out by a Latin/Complex choice.  There is a "Complex Scripts" tab in the Tools, Options dialog.
I have removed all languages except English from the Office 2003 settings.  I unmarked "Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages (including Thai)" in Windows XP's Regional and Language Options box from the Control Panel.  (And then I got a message that some files didn't match, so had to get the XP disc from our IT dept., and ended up reinstalling over a dozen XP updates!)
And still I have the same useless, distracting changes in place.  And I don't even know how it happened!
EXPERT:  What more do I have to do to get back to normal?

I am sure you probably already tried this, but have you gone in and deleted your Normal.dot.  If you close windows > delete normal.dot > and then reopen Word will rebuild the normal.dot.  If this doesn't work let me know I have a few other tricks we can try.

I'm home, while the problem is at work.  No, I have NOT tried deleting Normal.dot--despite it being one of the things we know to regularly tell OUR clients when the problem is inexplicable!
I'll go for that first, then try the other relevant parts of the multi-step check-thru.

Deleting Normal.dot didn't help.

GrahamSkan's sequence up through but NOT including "Step 5. Uninstall and Reinstall Word" doesn't help either.  (I've deleted the new Registry item and renamed the copied one back to just Word, btw.)

I'll eventually consult my IT guys here on doing the uninstall and reinstall.  If I'm going to lose too much customization and have to recreate it--and risk getting the problem back again in the process--I'll just live with the nuisances instead.  (One nuisance I haven't mentioned 'til now:  Placing my cursor at the left or right end of a line automatically selects the whole line.  Why this is useful for right-to-left or mixed scripts I can't guess.)

And in the mean time, I'm increasing the points to 500, in the hope that somebody will answer with a SPECIFIC fix rather than the start-over work-around that reinstallation is.

Hi, George...what customization are you talking about losing? There isn't THAT much that isn't stored in normal.dot!

:)

Where are you getting the phrase "complex scripts"? Can you take a screenshot of what you're talking about? What are the names AND FILE EXTENSIONS of the files you're opening?

by: George_T_SLCPosted on 2007-06-25 at 15:17:32ID: 19359676

1.  I'm not talking about losing customization by deleting normal.dot, but losing customization by uninstalling and reinstalling.

2.  I'll add a screen shot if you'll tell me how.  In the meantime, here is an imitation layout of the "Font" window's "Font" tab in ANY document--including a NEW BLANK FILE, attached only to the reconstituted normal.dot:

Font

Latin text font: ------------------------     Font style:                   Size
  Times New Roman                               Regular                        12
                                                                 Regular                       10
                                                                 Italic                            11
                                                                 Bold                             12

Complex scripts---------------------------------------------------------------------------
  Font:                                                Font style:                   Size
  Times New Roman                               Regular                        12

All text --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
