Can I edit a .DOC after pasting in .PDF

I have attached a Word DOC that I created by taking an original PDF, using the select tool to copy it to clipboard, then pasting it into a blank Word document.  I want to edit this to be able to put in merge words.  I am at a loss how to do it (I assume I can do it, which may be my first mistake).
