strange 8 character number files in directory all end with 0

We are getting strange 8 character number files all ending with 0 in a directory that has all Word and Excel documents in this directory.  Is Excel or Word creating the files?? can someone please advise. Thanks

do the file names have a tilde in them   ~~~~

If so they are temp files

They can be removed.

File names which are eight alphanumeric characters long are what MSDOS required. So the chances are that these are legacy files from the MSDOS era. They should still be able to be opened by Excel. However it is also possible that they are temp file - as already mentioned by briancassin.
