Word docs lose password when emailed

I have a user who claims to have been emailed a couple of word docs and she says they should have a password but the docs don't appear to retain them once the attachment is saved.
I have yet to looked into this yet but thought it worth asking the experts for any info as i have googles it but don't get anything related in the search results.
