Sounds like a bad addin. Does it work in Word safe mode (start > run > type winword /a and hit enter)? If so, then have a look at this:

I received an error message when I try to open any Microsoft Word file.
"Unknown error returned from application. Error caught at [file.\Connect.cpp,Line 593], operation canceled. Contact technical support if this error persists

You may want to try a repair install of office or even fully uninstall and reinstall office.
