Make sure you have enough memory and are far enough along with Windows Updates. You should make sure you are at SP3 (ensure drivers up to date first) and all updates are complete. You should have at least 1Gb of memory, preferably 2 Gb.
Then try Office Diagnostics and see if that finds anything. Word Options -> Resources.
Then, if no joy, check thoroughly for spyware, viruses and other malware.
