Does Word in general take a long time to open up, or is it just every other doument?  If it is certain documents, you might want to check the documents file location, you may find that the template path points to a networklocation no longer in use, or not even one that exists. Point this to your normal.dot, and you should be fine.

If it is the application, then you should do fine following the steps mentioned by Gary!

Good luck!

Paul

Echoing the above, and so no points please:

1) Check to see whether you have network templates (or if your templates directory is on a network share)

2) Are there network printers that you have mapped but no longer exist?

3) Are there mapped drives that no longer exist?

Its word in general takes a long time, any local file or network file doesn't matter, it just takes a while to load.  How can I reset the normal.dot file?

Does it work in Word safe mode (start > run > type winword /a and hit enter)? If so, have a look at this:

Your normal.dot file is often the case - either search your PC for it or it is probably in this location:

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

Just delete it (don't empty your trash though just in case you wish to restore it).

While at it also go to

C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Word

and delete any temp or files beginning with the ~ tilde character (in reality you can delete all files in this folder usually as it saves auto recovery file information here)

If the above doesn't do it then check the network drives as mentioned early in this thread

Hopefully that will do it

There where mapped drives that were not being used anymore.  So I disconnected the drives and Word was much better.
