Hi David,
Both fields are the same. I am using Word 2007 and have tried it with Word 2003, same thing. It only happens to hyperlinks to pdf documents, not to anything else: txt, images and doc files are all fine.
Aina.

Have just searched the exchange for my trouble and none of the pervious solutions to this problem apply to me. I have a hyperlink in my Word document that points to a file on the server. Yet if I Ctrl -click on the link, I get Unable to open http://www.mydomain.com/my
Yet if I copy the link into IE of FF it opens the file just fine. The hyperlink is not relative, so the problem is not there. Also I get this error with hyperlinks to pdf and doc documents, not to the text files.

Do you have any PDF add-ins (such as Adobe Acrobat, PDF creator, etc.) installed / enabled in Word? If so, you might try temporarily disabling the add-in(s) and see if the problem persists. To temporarily start Word without add-ins, you can go to Start --> Run, and type winword.exe /a. Let me know if the hyperlinks work after trying that.
This is kind of a long shot, but...
Can you try adding the path of the file server to the "Trusted Locations" under Word Options --> Trust Center --> Click "Trust Center Settings" button. Next, check the box labeled "Allow trusted locations on my network". Next, click the "Add new location button" and add the path to the file server that the hyperlink points to. Lastly, try opening the hyperlink again. Let me know what happens...

What version of Word are you using? If you right-click the hyperlinke and select "Edit Hyperlink" you should see two fields, one is labled text to display and the other is the actual address that the hyperlink points to. The text in both of these fields should be the same. Hope this helps...
