I honestly don't know why compare function is not working.
I am trying exactly the same example as on MS site (
http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/word/HP051876761033.aspx) ... the one with multiple conditions. I replaced merged fields with mine.
I pay attention so have curly brackets as commands (ctrl + f9).
If I try different example, skipping AND and COMPARE function, mergefields and such work ok.
I always get syntax error! ...argh. What am I doing wrong? Does compare function need any special installation or something?

{ IF { = AND ( { COMPARE { MERGEFIELD CustomerNumber } >= 4 }, { COMPARE { MERGEFIELD CustomerRating } <= 3 } ) } = 1 "Satisfactory" "Unsatisfactory"}
